Sam Grisman Outlines Intimate East Coast Trio Run with Tim O’Brien and Victor Furtado

Sam Grisman has assembled an acoustic trio for a short winter tour. Joining the genre torchbearer and son of the great David “Dawg” Grisman is the great multi-instrumentalist and member of Hot Rize, Tim O’Brien, joined by a frequent participant in Sam’s self-titled project, Victor Furtado.

The tour will focus on three stops along the East Coast, beginning Thursday, January 15, at the Bull Run Concert Series in Shirley, Mass. The next night, Friday, January 17, will take the threesome, comprised of players on stand-up bass, guitar, and banjo, to Jimmy’s Jazz Club in Portsmouth, N.H. The group will close out the run after a show on Saturday, January 17, at The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro, Maine.

While sharing the news online, Sam scribed a personal message, telling fans: The legendary @timobrienmusic is one of the most beloved and influential singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists in American acoustic music and the impact that his songs and musicianship have had on our tribe of acousticians is immeasurable.

When I was a Junior in high school if you would have asked me what my dream job would be, without a doubt I would have answered “to be in the Tim O’Brien Band.” It is a great honor to get to play some of my favorite Tim tunes with the man himself, and to get to do it in a trio setting with the great Victor Furtado (@dirtbanjo), one of my favorite pickin’ pals who also grew up on Tim’s music, is going to make for a special experience for everyone on stage and in the audience! We can’t wait to see y’all out there.

The forthcoming trio tour follows Sam’s January 2025 duo run with Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman, which offered intimate, acoustic performances along the East Coast. After delivering the trio gigs, Sam and his band will support Peter Rowan during his Decades in Song performance at The Ryman, with special guests Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Bryan Sutton.
