Autumn in New York means the return of Robtober, Robert Glasper’s beloved annual fall residency at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club. Since setting off Robtober Season Six on Oct. 2, the iconic jazz pianist and genre-bending visionary has welcomed a slew of high-profile guests to support his seasonal celebration, including Rae, Andra Day and Marsha Ambrosius. On Oct. 9 and 10, attendees were treated to an ensemble featuring two of Glasper’s closest collaborators and legends in their right: Questlove and Common.
Through the course of four shows, the powerhouse quintet—rounded out by bassist Burniss Travis and Isaiah Sharkey (whose talents can be heard across D’Angelo and the Vanguard’s Black Messiah)–tapped into each of the leaders’ discographies, mixing and matching across their storied careers to present cuts from Common’s iconic 2005 offering Be, Questlove’s legendary hip-hop group The Roots and Glasper’s recently released 2024 album Code Derivation. Robtober Season 6 will continue through Nov. 3, welcoming more guests like Doobie Powell, Little Brother, Stokley, Chris Dave, Derrick Hodge and Jahi Sundance along the way.
