Primus Release ‘A Handful of Nuggs,’ New EP Preceding Claypool Gold Tour
Just days before they set out on the highly anticipated Claypool Gold tour, Primus have released A Handful of Nuggs, a new four-track EP. The leftfield funk-metal trio’s new project, available digitally now and releasing as a limited 12-inch vinyl pressing on July 22, reflects the best of the band’s new chapter with drummer John Hoffman, who assumed the seat formerly held by Tim “Herb” Alexander last February.
A Handful of Nuggs is led by the new track “The Ol’ Grizz,” billed as one of the first studio recordings the band cut with Hoffman. It’s a classic case of Primus’ genre-bending machinations, colliding smoked-out psychedelia and backbreaking technical proficiency to let loose the sort of agitated, swarmy scutter-funk only they can conjure. The new track is packaged with “Little Lord Fentanyl,” the Maynard James Keenan-led dark fantasy released last June, alongside a live version of Brown Album essential “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)” from Philadelphia’s Mann Center. A fresh studio cover of Dio’s “Holy Diver,” featuring lead vocals from Puddle Pity Party, rounds out the collection.
Primus will cross the country this summer with Claypool Gold, banding together three of bassist and bandleader Les Claypool’s beloved outfits for an unprecedented collaborative outing. From May 20 to July 4, Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium and Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade will unite for a 30-stop tour, promising a “mind-melting musical experience” and “fluid show featuring wildly different setlists and surprises.” With Primus’ A Handful of Nuggs, all three participating acts have released projects in the lead-up to the tour, following The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy and the Frog Bridage’s Return Of The Live Frogs: Volume 1.
A Handful of Nuggs is available to stream and pre-order now. Find tickets for the Claypool Gold tour at lesclaypool.com.
