Phish Conclude Spring Tour with Expansive Jams at the Hollywood Bowl

Last night, April 27, Phish concluded their Spring Tour with a third and final stand at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. After a week of seven tremendous shows down the West Coast brought them to cities less common on their hit list and showed a promising start to their 42nd year of performances, the jam giants treated their Angeleno fans to a grand finale with some landmark extended jams.
Phish set off their eighth performance at the famed Hollywood Bowl with a bust-out of their highly structured Latin groove “The Ladyland.” This setting-appropriate intro was the standalone track’s first appearance since August 2022, although “Punch You in the Eye,” the song from which it spun off, made it to the stage at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Auditorium on Wednesday, April 23. From this casual and well-received opener, the band plunged into “Cavern,” then merged into a race-pace first “Llama” of the year. The group forged ahead through “Sand” to the Gamehendge essential “The Lizards,” then bridged the suspiciously slinking funk of “Hey Stranger” into an exploratory treatment of “Timber (Jerry the Mule).” The year’s first joy and an explosive, tank-emptying “Most Events Aren’t Planned” concluded the first frame.
While the first set thrived for its selection of concise crowd-pleasing songs, the evening’s latter half saw the band commit to some of its most adventurous jamming of the year so far in a nearly totally segued seven-track voyage. The Vermont quartet tested the waters with a high-energy opener of “More,” then launched their spree of transitions with “You Enjoy Myself,” which climbed to several radiant breakthroughs as it pushed on to nearly 28 minutes. This was the longest treatment of the longstanding setlist staple since July 26, 1998’s 29-minute version. A seamless transition took the song into “Twist” for the first time on record, which in turn cascaded into “Kill Devil Falls,” “Lifeboy,” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” After one last left turn into “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.,” Phish returned to the stage for a searing 22-minute encore of “Fuego,” which was the first single encore song to cross the 20-minute mark since August 2004.
Phish will return to the spotlight on June 20 for a performance at Manchester, N.H.’s SNHU Arena to set off their 23-stop Summer Tour. For tickets and more information, visit phish.com.
