Just two days out from the hotly anticipated return of Terrapin Crossroads’ Sunday Daydream, Phil Lesh has announced that he will be unable to perform at the event due to a COVID diagnosis. The legendary Grateful Dead bassist shared the unfortunate news in a post to Terrapin Crossroads’ social media channels, in which he also noted that his place on stage during the fourth Sunday Daydream celebration—still scheduled for tomorrow, Aug. 18 at San Rafael, Calif.’s Marin County shoreline at McNears Beach—will be filled by Sam Grisman, who will perform earlier at the event in a set of his own.
Lesh joked in the announcement, “Well, it wouldn’t be Terrapin if there wasn’t a curveball! I’m bummed to let you know that I won’t be able to perform this weekend at ‘Sunday Daydream Vol. 4’. I’ve come down with Covid, and while I’m doing great and resting at home, I’ll miss seeing all your beautiful faces.
“Of course, the Music Never Stops!” The artist continues, “I’ll be at the festival in spirit, and I’m happy that Terrapin Nation will be coming together again to see the incredible lineup that we put together for you. My “Friends” – Taylor Goldsmith & Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes, Stu Allen, Holly Bowling, Grahame Lesh, & Natalie Cressman – will perform an epic headlining set in my absence, joined by the fantastic Sam Grisman filling in on bass. If you aren’t familiar with Sam, he’s an incredible bass player who I’m proud to have fill my shoes. In fact I’ll be sending down my beloved bass, Big Brown, for him to play.”
The rest of Sunday’s program will proceed as scheduled, with a performance from Wolf Jett featuring Alex Jordan kicking off the festivities. Sam Grisman Project will follow, delivering a special set honoring the legacy of Jerry Garcia’s bluegrass collaborations with his father David Grisman. “The music that my father, David Grisman, and his close friend, Jerry Garcia, made in the early 90s in the house that I grew up in is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded,” Sam Grisman said in a release on the show’s announcement, “but it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories,”
