Peter Shapiro Discusses Environmental Activism in the Music Industry on ‘The Nature of Music’ Podcast

For the newest episode of The Nature of Music podcast, concert promoter and LOCKN’ co-founder Peter Shapiro chats with host Jonathan Gelbard about his ongoing pursuits in the realm of environmental activism, dating back to his early days as the owner of the beloved New York City venue/eco-activism center Wetlands Preserve.

“I was a film kid,” the Brooklyn Bowl and FANS founder says of his origins. “I had made these films on the Grateful Dead, on the road, on tour, so I saw how important that scene was, and Wetlands was the home of that scene in New York… [I met former owner Larry Bloch] and he basically gave me Wetlands – he made it possible, I paid him over time – and in exchange, I committed to continue the activism center and the sustainability efforts they were pushing.”

In his answers to listener questions, Shapiro dives further into his advocacy for sustainability in the live music industry and explores the social response to both COVID-19 and climate change.

Previous interviewees on The Nature of Music – which is produced by the Conservation Value Institute – include Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz of ALO and Nat Keefe of Hot Buttered Rum.
