Paul McCartney Photography Exhibit Captures Rise of Beatlemania from Icon’s Lens with Gagosian

After a packed week in which he performed three intimate last-minute shows at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and closed out Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special with a medley of songs from Abbey Road, Paul McCartney maintains his momentum today with the announcement of a new photo exhibition with Gagosian.

Showing at Gagosian’s Beverly Hills gallery from April 25 to June 21, the new exhibit comprises 36 recently recovered photographs taken by McCartney between December 1963 and February 1964. The archival rarities offer a glimpse into the rise of Beatlemania from backstage and, even more enticingly, a glimpse of the legendary artist’s interiority as he rapidly rose to become one of, if not the single most globally acclaimed musician of all time. Comprising candid, intimate views of his bandmates and harried snaps of the hysteria that surrounded them, these images are a vital piece of not only Beatles history, but the greater history of popular culture.

McCartney’s images–which originate in Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, DC and Miami–will be reproduced in small editions by Gagosian, with each print signed by the artist himself. A portion of the proceeds from this run will go to support wildfire recovery and rebuilding efforts in Southern California. The gallery coincides with the touring exhibition Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm, which opened to a tremendous response at London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2023 and will move to San Francisco’s de Young Museum on March 1.
