Two weeks into the European leg of Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts’ ongoing Love Earth Tour, the band proved they still have gas in the tank after producing a series of first-time treatments of select songs by this specific lineup: Young, Spooner Oldham (Farfisa organ), Micah Nelson (guitar and vocal), Corey McCormick (bass and vocal), Anthony LoGerfo (drums). Debuts came to fruition during the band’s arrival at Waldbühne in Berlin, Germany, on Thursday, July 3, and continued during their ensuing stops on July 4 and 6.
Young and his musical accomplices have been stirring up a series of debuts and bust-outs on the road, including the first night of their Euro-trek [June 18 in Sweden]. Night one set the course for a dominant motif that has continued, including their July 1 concert. During the previously mentioned gig, Young and his newly formed band produced a rare public rendering of “Ambluence Blues,” which served as Chrome Hearts’ first play of the On the Beach inclusion. As for the Godfather of Grunge, it marked the end of a six-year hiatus since the last time he worked through the selected song.
In line with their other regional shows, the band kept up the pattern on July 3. The concert in Berlin brought fan favorite “Southern Man” to the surface for the bandleader, who hadn’t played the protest song since 2019. Its arrival also represented the first European performance since 1993, and a live debut for The Chrome Hearts. During the latter half of the concert, they produced a live debut of Ragged Glory’s “Love to Burn.”
Young & The Chrome Hearts kept up the same tenacity for surprises at Sparkassen Park in Mönchengladbach, Germany, during their Friday, July 4 gig. The ensemble of rock stalwarts positioned “Cowgirl in the Sand” in the concert’s second slot; its placement represented a first for this group of players, marked as a debut. The night’s rendition included fiery instrumental interludes that flexed the capacity of the guitar/bass trio: Young, Nelson and McCormick. See below.
Ultimately, during the band’s latest performance on Sunday, July 6, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, they maintained their current system by focusing particular effort to deliver live debuts. This time, opting for Crazy Horse rarity, Zuma featured “Don’t Cry No Tears.” Later on, they mustered up one more, this time, “Daddy Went Walkin’,” a first from the Chrome Hearts band, and a bust out for Young, who last delivered the Silver & Gold included cut in 2009, effectively ending a 16-year lapse in plays.
The band will continue the European leg of their Love Earth Tour on July 8 at Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart, Germany. For tickets and additional information, visit neilyoungarchives.com.
