When you were young and on your own/ How did it feel to be alone?

On Monday, September 1, Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts pulled into the latest location for their ongoing Love Earth Tour, the Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Englewood, Colo. The Centennial State appearance maintained the bandleader’s current approach to revitalizing his setlist by positioning a tour debut into the 16-song main frame. During last night’s performance, Young’s After the Gold Rush classic, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” returned to the fold for the first time since Sept. 14, 2019.

Like prior concerts, Monday night’s gig rendered a similar configuration of songs that led into the night’s apex, beginning with “Ambulance Blues,” “Cowgirl In The Sand,” “Be The Rain,” as well as thought pieces, “Southern Man” and “Ohio.” After “Long Walk Home,” Young led the band through his response to the Trump administration, via a new number, “Big Crime,” which debuted live on August 27 during a concert at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago. Another 2025 first-time play, “Silver Eagle,” preluded “Looking Forward,” a piece off Young’s 25th studio album, Silver & Gold, which effectively opened the door for “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.” The latter began in typical fashion, with the bandleader asking, “When you were young and on your own/ How did it feel to be alone?”

Notably, Young first played the track on May 12, 1970, during a concert at the Denver Coliseum with CSNY. Since its debut, he has added the song to his setlist a total of 251 times, according to sugarmtn.org. Prior to last night’s return, it had not been accounted for since Sept. 14, 2019, making its return all the more meaningful, especially for the broken-hearted.

Following last night’s concert in Colorado, Young and The Chrome Hearts will continue west, performing in Washington state, before a pair of Vancouver concerts, and concluding with the final leg of live appearances on the 2025 Love Earth Tour in Oregon and California. Tickets.
