On Monday evening, Neil Young returned to a former haunt, the site of the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair, and current Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, N.Y. Young’s first-ever appearance at Max Yasgur’s farm occurred during the electric portion of CSNY’s festival gig, in the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 1969. Young turned up during the band’s electric set, arriving on “Mr. Soul,” a song that also appeared on last night’s Love Earth Tour stop, and evoked a 56-year throughline from his Buffalo Springfield days to his current Chrome Hearts Band.

Besides the night’s historic element, Young continued his current motif of adding new material to this tour’s song bank, returning to classics that have informed the arrangement of material unleashed during his latest live appearances in the US, following an early summer spent performing in Europe. Yesterday’s tour debut rose like smoke during the onset of the concert’s encore. Conjuring a peppery effect and leaving something sticky to remember it by, Young delivered his Tonight’s The Night cut, “Roll Another Number (For The Road),” for the first time since last year’s appearance at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., in September 2024.

Young’s live history performing “Roll Another Number (For The Road)” goes back before the 1975 release of his sixth studio album, to an August 11, 1973, early show that was billed as Young and The Santa Monica Flyers in Topanga Canyon, Calif. Following its debut, it has been played with regularity, approximately 317 times since its debut, according to www.sugarmtn.org. In typical fashion for his current live show, after turning in the tour debut, he provided a ripping conclusion to the night on “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

After last night’s gig in Bethel, N.Y., Young and The Chrome Hearts will perform at Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavilion. Tickets remain on sale.
