My Morning Jacket Returns

April 21, 2010

My Morning Jacket returned from an extended hibernation last night for a performance at Birmingham, AL’s Alabama Theater. Preservation Hall Jazz Band opened the show and Jim James sat in with the ensemble for two songs he recently recorded with them in the studio: “Louisiana Fairytale” and “St. James Infirmary.”

My Morning Jacket’s set offered a mix of road-tested originals and covers, beginning with a bit of The Who’s “Eminence Front” that led into the anthem “One Big Holiday.” In addition to favorites like “Gideon,” “The Way That He Sings,” “Off The Record,” “Magheetah” and “I’m Amazed,” My Morning Jacket offered its first take on "Losin’ Yo Head from James’ Monsters of Folk project. Near the end of the show, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, joined MMJ onstage for “Evil Urges,” “Highly Suspicious,” Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up,” Herman’s Hermits’ “Mother in Law” and Al Johnson’s “Carnival Time.” The members of My Morning Jacket paid tribute to Johnson at a benefit in New Orleans a few years ago.
