Today, Oct. 14, My Morning Jacket dropped a digital seven-track collection of music entitled Live From RCA Studio A (Acoustic). The material was recorded independently by the group’s frontman, Jim James, after members of the ensemble tested positive for COVID-19 prior to their recording session.  

In addition to audio recordings, today’s release also includes the official live performance videos from the studio sessions cut at RCA Studio A in Nashville, Tenn. The newly reimagined acoustic interpretations incorporates material plucked off the group’s self-titled 2021 album, with numbers like “Complex,” “Never in the Real World,” “Lucky to Be Alive,” and a sparkling rendition of “Love Love Love” included.

In a press release distributed by the band, frontman James delved into the details behind the seven-track. He stated, “In late August 2021, we were set to record a full-band live session at RCA Studio A when one of our band members tested positive for Covid.”

James continued, “With the full film and audio crew set to record in this beautiful and historic studio, we didn’t want to let the moment go to waste, so we decided to try out acoustic versions of songs from our new self-titled album.”

He concludes, “Every song you see or hear from this season was me giving it a go solo for the first time, with a wonderful audience consisting of our road crew as well as filmmaker Danny Clinch and his crew.” 

Today’s announcement comes a week before the release of My Morning Jacket’s MMJ Live Vol. 2: Chicago 2021, which will arrive on Oct. 21 exclusively on 3LP translucent orange vinyl. The collections features a six-sided, 20-song setlist of career highlights. Pre-order MMJ Live Vol. 2: Chicago now.
