On Friday, June 13, moe.’s Summer Tour pulled into the Sharkey’s Event Center in Liverpool, N.Y. The night was billed to include Umphrey’s McGee, who delivered their main frame ahead of moe.’s single set arrival. Ultimately, the night coalesced in a collaborative finish, with both groups coming together to cover Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless,” but not before moe.’s additional guest, Warren Haynes, turned up and assisted on a Led Zeppelin original during the set’s eighth slot.
moe. stepped on stage to Sly & the Family Stone’s “I Want to Take You Higher,” nodding to the late funk-rock veteran, who passed away on June 9, before the arrival of their original, the No Doy feature, “Moth.” The band continued to work through selections of their repertoire. After arriving on “The Pit” and adding it to the night’s song bank, they administered a live rendition of a newer number that served as a piece off their latest LP, “Band in the Sky.” Ultimately, moe. dug into the either, pulling out an oldie and fan favorite, “New York City.”
Nate Wilson’s own “In Stride” slid in next, assuming the set’s fifth slot ahead of “Silver Sun” and Rob Derhak’s “Ups and Downs.” The concert’s initial guest took his place next to the host. Notably, Warren Haynes was in the region as a part of the New York State Blues Festival, [a festival bill he took part in the following day, Saturday, June 14, with help from guest Ruthie Foster, who sat in on Haynes’ Man in Motion cut, “River’s Gonna Rise”] prior to his festival call time, Haynes assisted moe. on a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.”
The guitar-heavy display was a prime example of collaborative might, which seethed into the night’s encore, a take on the Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless.” The song represented a first for moe., and a bust out for Umphrey’s McGee, who ended a 172-show lapse, last covering the song on May 27, 2023.
moe. followed up on Saturday, June 14, taking part in Northlands ahead of their Sunday slot at All Good Festival. For more information on the band, visit their official website.
