On Feb. 22, 2025, Circles Around The Sun and Mikaela Davis arrived at The Independent in San Francisco for the second to last night of their four-stop California run, billed as a nod to their 2024-released After Sunrise EP and more original material.
During the concert’s second set, the band welcomed Davis’ Relix 50 collaborator/ Phish bassist Mike Gordon and his daughter Tessa to sit in on the aforementioned LP’s namesake number.
Previously, on April 5, 2024, Circles and Davis released their 28-minute set of music, comprised of studio cuts of “Gloaming Way,” “Moonbow,” and “After Sunrise,” in addition to an 11+ minute live capture of Circles Around the Sun’s 2023 LP Language title track, from Boston.
All the aforementioned material was performed live during the group’s gig on Saturday, including “After Sunrise,” which included added grooves from the guest bassist and shared harmonies from Davis and Tessa Gordon.
Back in January, during Relix’s 50th-anniversary event, dubbed Taper’s Choice with Friends & Casual Acquaintances, at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl, Mike Gordon and Mikaela Davis joined forces for the first time. The pair keyboardist Robert Walter elaborated on Willie Nelson’s “Darkness on the Face of the Earth.”
