Gov’t Mule’s spring tour continued last night in Albertville, AL. Opening for the quartet at Sand Mountain Amphitheater was Maggie Rose. This was a one-off pairing of the two artists, after Gov’t Mule was joined by Larkin Poe for seven shows.
The Mule’s single extended set opened with the band’s signature take on Tom Waits’ “Going Out West,” which the group last performed as an encore at the tour opener on March 27 in Denver. Another early highlight was a sequence that moved from the band’s “Game Face,” which included a “Norwegian Wood” tease, then into the Allman Brothers Band’s iconic “Mountain Jam” before resolving into “Game Face.”
A bit later, the quartet performed Temple of The Dog cover “Hunger Strike” for the first time since 2/17/24 in Oakland. The tune led into “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” which also last appeared on that date in a similar position, and then back into “Hunger Strike.”
Gov’t mule then delivered three originals, spanning 20 years, via “Shake Our Way Out,” from 2023’s Peace… Like a River, followed by “Captured,” from 2013’s Shout! and “Time To Confess,” which appeared on 2002’s The Deep End, Vol. 2.
Following “Time to Confess” Maggie Rose took the stage, along with her bandmates Cav Mimms on keys and M.P. Gannon on guitar. The seven musicians then tore into a rousing version of “Turn On Your Lovelight.” The set subsequently concluded with Gov’t Mule digging in on “Thorazine Shuffle,” followed by a “Soulshine” encore.
This evening, the Mule will appear in Little Rock, AR at The Hall, while Maggie Rose is at MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC.
