“Look Out, Mama”: Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts Perform Tour Debut of “Powderfinger” in British Columbia
On Saturday, September 6, Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts emerged on the outdoor stage at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, British Columbia. The five-piece band’s latest stop on their Love Earth outing accounted for a tour debut, the first “Powderfinger” since September 24, 2024’s concert at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. The decision to pull out the late-70s Rust Never Sleeps anthem represented a barnburner during the weekend gig, and emphasized Young’s current trend of dusting off classic examples from his songbook at nearly every stop of his current excursion.
The tour debut of “Powderfinger” landed seven moves into the concert, and was positioned after the standard starter for this string of outings, “Ambulance Blues.” The band, comprised of Young, Micah Nelson, Spooner Oldham, Corey McCormick and Anothy LoGerfo basked in “Cowgirl in the Sand,” asserting “Hello, woman of my dreams,” before turning their collective attention to the good of the environment via Crazy Horse co-write, “Be the Rain,” and offering palpable critique on fan favorite, “Southern Man.”
From the South, the band moved North to “Ohio,” summoning the Vietnam protest song, before Young picked up his harmonica and provided the intro to “Long Walk Home.” After completing their sonic jaunt, the band landed on the concert’s tour debut. “Powderfinger” squealed from the start, elicited via Young’s cry: “Look out, Mama, there’s a white boat coming up the river!”
The onset of the electric song initiated cheers from the crowd in recognition of the defining concert moment, a hard-hitting number played 812 times by Young during his sage career, all of which stem from the track’s May 26, 1978, debut at San Francisco’s The Boarding House. Young’s delivery took on a narrative effect, a rocking revival of his commitment to breaking the mold and fighting the good fight. Watch a fan-shot video below.
