Lizzo Plays 1813 Crystal Flute Owned by James Madison Live in Washington D.C.

Last night, Lizzo played a crystal flute dating back to 1813 owned by the 4th U.S. President James Madison during her concert at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The performance was part of the pop icon, singer, rapper and flutist’s North American Tour.

Days before Lizzo’s stop, Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, tweeted an invitation to Lizzo to check out the library’s extensive flute collection. “The Library of Ccongress has the largest flute collection in the world with more than 1,800. It incl Pres James Madison’s 1813 crystal flute,” she wrote. “Lizzo we would love for you to come see it and even play a couple when you are in DC next week. Like your song they are ‘Good as hell.'”

According to the Library of Congress, the flute was crafted by French flute designer Claude Laurent and gifted to James Madison in honor of his second inauguration.

“This is crazy. I have to be really careful,” Lizzo remarked as they brought the flute on stage. “This is from the early 1800s, this was a gift to James Madison from a French crystal flute designer to celebrate his second term. There was a fire… and the only two things that were saved were a portrait of George Washington and this crystal flute right here.”

“I am the first person to ever play it,” she added, “so you’re about to hear what it sounds like for the first time.”

After examining the beauty of the instrument, she played a few notes while twerking before handing it back to the representative.

She then said with joy, “Bitch, I just twerked and played James Madison’s flute from the 1800s! Thank you to the Library of Congress for preserving our history and making history cool. History is freaking cool, you guys!”
