Ty Segall has announced Possession, his 16th studio album. Due to release on May 30 via Drag City, the prolific garage-psych rocker’s next offering reroutes from the intricate, unpredictable compositions of 2024’s Three Bells and Love Rudiments to craft a narratively-driven set of stories from the new world. Segall’s restless innovation is apparent on the scenic lead single “Fantastic Tomb,” and he’s shared a new set of fall tour dates to show that he won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
Possession pairs Segall’s singular songwriting with lyrics from filmmaker Matt Yoka, furthering a partnership that brought visuals to 2011’s Goodbye Bread, 2014’s Manipulator and 2016’s Emotional Mugger. Yoka’s outsider perspective led to lyrics rich in detailed imagery, carved down by the collaborators to a pointed assessment of the characters that are kicking and kicked in America today. These stories are complemented by some of Segall’s most compelling arrangements to date; today’s account of a rip-off gone wrong smacks of “The Cask of Amontillado” and matches his fuzz-drenched guitar with Mikal Cronin’s wailing saxophone.
On top of today’s announcement, Segall has shared a new batch of tour dates to keep him busy through the fall. After a previously announced loop of 23 dates around the U.S. from March 25 to May 18, he’ll return to the road for seven West Coast sets from Oct. 8-18, including stands at Solana Beach, Calif.’s Belly Up Tavern, San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom and Portland, Ore.’s Wonder Ballroom.
