Theo Croker has shared another cut from his upcoming record Dream Manifest with the second advance single “we still wanna dance.” Set to release on June 13 via Dom Recs, Croker’s seventh studio album pushes his blend of post-bop, neo-soul, hip-hop and more to new recombinations, showing more dimensions of his heady style with each track. On today’s preview, the Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer embraces electronic abstraction to tremendous, hypnotic effect.
Where the lead single “high vibrations” drew from house for an infectious and insightful club meditation, “we still wanna dance” evokes techno in its progressive, textural quality. Over fluttering percussion, Croker and co-producer D’LEAU layer cascading piano, winding bass and pointillistic flashes of horn that show structural influence from loop-based beatmaking. It’s equally cerebral and danceable, and like so much of Croker’s work, it’s at once firmly grounded in jazz tradition and boldly branching out to the music’s future.
Croker will take Dream Manifest on the road this year with a world tour, making 26 stops in Europe and 13 stateside, including four-night residencies at Seattle’s Demetrius Jazz Alley from May 1-4 and New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club from Aug. 14-17.
