Sierra Ferrell has shared the latest preview of her impending full-length release, Trail of Flowers, due on March 22 via Rounder Records. “I Could Drive You Crazy” exudes bluegrass flair, accentuated with acoustic instrumentals: fiddle hooks and driving drum, and cut with hollering harmonies that evoke a timeless foot-stomping presentation.
“I Could Drive You Crazy” arrives after “Dollar Bill Bar” and “Fox Hunt.” The latter was performed during Ferrell’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance on Thursday, January 18. As a whole, the set showcases Ferrell’s migration through various locations, generating lyrically-driven imagery and visions of her reality, taking the listener through tales of dive bar love stories, murder ballads and tales of her nomadic upbringing.
Touching on today’s release, Ferrell offered via a press release, “I was hanging out with some friends and we had an idea for a song where you’re telling someone, ‘I’m not good at this and I’m not good at that, but one thing I can do is drive you crazy.’” She continued, “We decided to put in some audio of my New Year’s Eve crowd at the end, so you can hear them howling on there. I always love getting everyone to howl at my shows—it’s a good, free feeling.”
Trail of Flowers was primarily recorded at Nashville, Tenn.’s Sound Emporium Studios and produced by Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton) and Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Gillian Welch). Previously, Ferrell commented on the project as a whole, stating, “With Trail of Flowers, I wanted to make a fuller sound with bigger drums, but still stay true to the stripped-down feel of old-time music whenever it felt right. I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past, but excited about the future of music.”
