S.G. Goodman has returned today with “Satellite,” the second advance single from her forthcoming third studio album Planting by the Signs. Due to arrive on June 20 from her own Slough Water Records/Thirty Tigers imprint, the rough-edged Americana singer-songwriter’s first offering in three years turns her lens on humankind’s fractured relationship with nature.
“The whole premise behind the practice of Planting by the Signs,” Goodman said, “is that we can look to nature to understand when would be the best time to do something to get the best results. I am interested in how man is obstructing nature and its ancient knowledge, while the human condition remains the same: that to survive we must be in harmony with nature and each other.”
Today’s preview traces the break with worldly judgment and detail. Against a sparse, tough arrangement of drums, ambling piano and guitar moans that owe as much to post-punk as folk, Goodman passes down ancestral reflections on our sorry state of remove from meaning. Her raw, enchanting vocals impart hard truths, telling listeners to “Look what it’s done to you.”
Goodman’s second single follows “Fire Sign,” an uptempo ritual anthem; taken together, the equally focused and powerful tracks show a revitalized range in her songwriting won in her time away from the stage. Yesterday, she announced her plans to celebrate her new record with a U.S. headline tour, making 26 stops across the country from Sept. 18 to Nov. 10. Find tickets and her full live itinerary here.
Planting by the Signs is available to pre-order now. Watch the studio-shot music video for “Satellite” below, and learn more about Goodman at sggoodman.net
