Today, May 21, Phish assume the spotlight again with the release of “Oblivion,” the second preview track from the legendary quartet’s 16th studio album Evolve, due to release on July 12 via JEMP Records and ATO. Hot on the heels of the band’s transcendent four-night residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere and following the first preview “Evolve,” which arrived in April, this latest selection flaunts the band’s collaborative prowess with a deep-pocketed groove on a recent live staple for Phish and TAB alike. This release also unveils the full tracklist for Evolve, which features more than a few familiar names of Trey Anastasio originals that have recently been embraced as a part of the band’s live catalog.

“Oblivion” demonstrates the dynamism of Phish’s new chapter in its striking divergence from the wide-eyed, breezy and string-lofted “Evolve,” cutting into the band’s hot and heavy funk proficiency. In Page McConnell’s rousing organ stings, a veritable beatdown from Jon Fishman and the undeniably tight interplay between Mike Gordon’s deep-pocketed backbeat and Anastasio’s fiery riffs, the performance amounts to a shimmering example of the far-out jams fans have come to expect from the 40-year frontrunners. The exhilarating new track is available on all streaming platforms now.

Evolve is the first studio offering from Phish in more than four eventful years, through which the band has risen to new heights of popularity and mastery of its form. The long-awaited return to the booth reflects a period of prolific creation from Anastasio; of the 12 songs on the album, five can be traced to the artist’s recent solo releases Lonely Trip and mercy, while “Life Saving Gun” was released on January, the 2023 collaboration between Anastasio and McConnell. Five further entries–“Pillow Jets,” “Monsters,” “Oblivion,” “Valdese” and “Ether Edge”–were debuted by the trio of Anastasio, Fishman and Dezron Douglas in 2023. The only completely unfamiliar entry on the album is “Human Nature.” Longtime producers Vance Powell and Bryce Goggin reprise their roles on the record, which was captured in the fall of 2023 at The Barn, the band’s hallowed Vermont studio.

Evolve is available to pre-order now from the Phish Dry Goods store; vinyl listeners will have exclusive access to the bonus track “The Well.” Learn more about the band, its upcoming album and its 2024 tour plans at phish.com.
