Neil Young has shared that “Talkin to the Trees,” the title track from his highly anticipated first album with the Chrome Hearts. Due on June 12 via Other Shoe/Reprise, Young’s debut with his new band has so far been a solid snapshot of where his head’s at these days, channeling the same persistent social commentary that defines the rest of his public-facing life into stark visions and portending forecasts of the world. While that current runs through the third cut, there’s also a sense of reflection on his personal life.

After releasing their debut single “Big Change” back in January and the American-made commentary anthem “Let’s Roll Again” earlier in May, Young’s latest cut with the Chrome Hearts pivots from thundering guitars to his softer, folkier side. “Talkin to the Trees” wisps on an easeful arrangement of acoustic and pedal steel guitars, brushed snares and occasional gusts of harmonica while Young sings softly about waiting in line at the farmer’s market, thinking about his friend Bob Dylan and “Talkin to the trees, waiting for the answer/ Waitin’ around for the word to change.” The track rings out like a sweet, if distantly pensive account of how the iconic singer-songwriter spends his Sundays.

Young and the Chrome Hearts–featuring guitarist Micah Nelson (a.k.a. Particle Kid), bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony Logerfo and organist Spooner Oldham–cut Talkin to the Trees at Malibu, Calif.’s Shangri La Studios with co-production from the bandleader and Lou Adler. On June 18, the ensemble will hit the road for a 23-stop summer tour across the US, UK, Europe and Canada. Young confirmed his Love Earth Tour in February after forecasting that the content of the performances “will reflect the feelings of the times.”
