LCD Soundsystem jolt listeners back to life today, Oct. 22, with the release of “X-Ray Eyes,” a rare new track from the two-decade electronica pioneers. Billed as a “very, very special exclusive” from London-based NTS Radio host Anu, who debuted the track on her weekly Soup to Nuts, the new cut shows the James Murphy-fronted outfit returning to its roots with techy, minimal production. Stripped down to a gritty, low-poly, proto-Detroit backbeat, Murphy rant-sings a repeated refrain “I’ve got eyes that can see inside/ I can see right through your disguise.” It’s a lo-fi funk of blips, slips and pings for just shy of five minutes–and a godsend for fans waiting out a drought.

“X-Ray Eyes” follows the full-throttle dance-punk of “New Body Rhumba,” released in 2022 to feature in Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise. Prior to that single, the band’s most recent studio release was 2017’s chart-topping American Dream–though they bought some goodwill with the top-tier live set Electric Lady Sessions in 2019.

Despite this stall on new offerings, the DFA Records founder and company have continued to make a name as hometown heroes, presenting at least one massively acclaimed event in New York every year. The band’s next NYC showing will be its annual holiday series, this year expanding its typical nine-show set to a 12-night residency at the Knockdown Center in Queens, N.Y. The “Annual Winter Function” will run on Nov. 21-24, Dec. 5-8, and Dec. 12-15, and feature special guest openers, after-party DJ sets, a DFA Records swap meet and more. Before the engagement, the band will spend eight nights in Los Angeles from Oct. 31 to Nov. 10.
