Expanding upon their impending A La Sala offerings, Khruangbin have delivered its latest single, “Pon Pón.” The 12-track album, due on April 5 via Dead Oceans in partnership with Night Time Stories Ltd., has been previewed today by the West African-tinged, dancefloor-ready track. Paired with the new single is its official visual equalizer, which can be streamed below.
“Pon Pón” presents an instrumental conversation between Laura Lee’s bass, DJ Johnson’s hi-hat, and Mark Speer’s rhythmic scrapes. The song draws in the listener with whispered confessions, eager to make sense of the soft, layered words. Before today’s drop, Khruangbin shared “A Love International” and “May Ninth” to ease the listener into the complete set.
Previously, the band shared background on the LP via a press release, offering, “A La Sala’s 12 songs were jigsaw pieces found in Khruangbin’s creative past, parts of the band not lost, but not yet tapped into. Having stockpiled ideas originally set down as off-the-cuff recordings (voice memos made at sound-checks, on long voyages, as absentminded epiphanies), they began fitting those pieces together in the studio for A La Sala.”
In conjunction with the release of “Pon Pón” and the impending promise of their first studio LP in four years, Khruangbin has also expanded their North American tour with festival appearances at Coachella, Boston Calling, and Bonnaroo, in addition to stands at legacy venues like Red Rocks, New York’s Forest Hills Tennis Stadium and the famed Greek Theatre.
