Jason Isbell has shared “Foxes in the Snow,” the second preview single and title track from his forthcoming first solo acoustic record. Set to release on March 7 via his own Southeastern Records imprint, Foxes in the Snow compiles 11 all-new songs into his first collection of new music since 2023, which presents a striking, unprecedentedly intimate view of the Americana figurehead.

Isbell makes the most of this close focus on today’s advance offering, a darkly devoted love song well suited for Valentine’s Day. The artist’s songwriting thrives as ever in its emotional nuance as rough-edged lyrics recounting the many, often shadowy, faces of love; “I love her well/ I love her sick,” Isbell sings. “I love the carrot, but I really like the stick.” As with the first preview “Bury Me,” a reveling ode to classic frontier imagery, this second sample sounds like a duet with his guitar, with masterful, commanding lines that evoke a knowing beyond words.

Foxes in the Snow was recorded at New York’s iconic Electric Lady Studio in October, 2024. In a five day sprint through those hallowed halls, Isbell set each track to tape with an all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17 acoustic guitar, capturing new heights of achievement as a songwriter, vocalist and instrumentalist with no frills or distractions. The recording is warm, full and unwaveringly heartful, resounding as a candid reflection of Isbell’s spirit.

Nearly two decades into a solo career launched with 2007’s Sirens of the Ditch, Isbell endures as an unmissable presence in rock and alternative country. After sharing Live from the Ryman, Vol. 2 last October, a full-length follow-up to the 400 Unit’s acclaimed 2018 collection Live from the Ryman continuing a longstanding relationship with the Music City institution, the artist continued to tour tirelessly (including several stops along the Harris-Walz campaign trail).

Before releasing his first solo album since 2015’s Something More Than Free, Isbell will return to the stage for 15 solo acoustic performances billed as “An Intimate Evening with Jason Isbell.” That run, which includes stops at New York’s Beacon Theatre, Washington, D.C.’s Warner Theatre and Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Hall, will begin tomorrow, Feb. 15 and conclude on March 29.
