Listen: Brian Eno Updates David Bowie’s “Get Real” with Nature Sounds

Three days out from Earth Day, Brian Eno has unveiled a new mix of David Bowie’s “Get Real,” adorning the deep cut with a chorus of natural sounds. Delivered as part of the Sounds Right initiative, which promotes awareness and action regarding climate change by making Nature an official artist on Spotify, this remix continues Eno’s legacy of thought-provoking soundscapes by retouching the 1995 and honoring the beauty and wonder of organic noise.

“Throughout my life I’ve wondered — how I can return something to the places I’ve taken ideas from?” Eno shared on the track, alluding to the famously atmospheric character of his calatog. “Music started out as the sounds of the natural world, and Sounds Right creates a system to give back to nature, helping to preserve the planet so that it can continue to inspire us for years to come.”

The new recording is a slight and subtle twist on the original, embedding such details as bees buzzing and seabirds calling in the sparser moments of the cut and building up to howls and moans of a symphony of fauna. “the animals are invading the song,” Eno elucidates. “It’s like it has sprung leaks everywhere and these animals are coming in through every window and crack between the doors. They’re sort of threatening – suddenly Nature has crept into the art.”

Through Sounds Right, A portion of the royalties from the new “Get Real” mix and all other entries crediting nature will go to Eno’s EarthPercent charity. In turn, EarthPercent will take these funds and divert them to various conservation and restoration ventures under the purview of the Sounds Rights Advisory Board, an assembly of the planet’s leading ecologists, activists, advocates for Indigenous Peoples and more. Eno and Bowie’s entry joins artists like Bomba Estéreo, Ellie Goulding and AURORA, plus an expansive collection of field recordings, on Nature’s Spotify.
