After Phish at Sphere, Drew Carey Considered Asking U2 for a Refund

Today, Drew Carey digs deeper into the Phish world and the hearts of fans everywhere as the saga of his viscerally amazing Sphere experience continues. Following his rapidly-circulated tweet from Tuesday, April 23, in which the comedian and host of The Price is Right said he’d “talked to God” and so much more, Carey made an appearance on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio and had some choice words for U2.
In conversation with host Ari Fink, Carey shared that prior to the Phish residency, he had visited Sphere multiple times for the U2:UV Achtung Baby Live, which ran from September 2023 to March of this year as the inaugural program at the pioneering new venue. “I was just like a casual U2 fan, but a friend of mine is really into it,” the comedian recalled. “He goes, ‘Hey, let’s go see U2 at the Sphere,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, at the Sphere, I’ve always wanted to see the Sphere. Might as well.’ I went, and it blew my mind how great it was, and I told all my friends… and I went the next two weekends in a row and I flew friends in like, ‘You gotta see this show before it closes.’”
But, months later, experiencing Phish’s historically high-concept performances put the U2 series in perspective. “Like three songs into Thursday night with Phish at the Sphere, I honestly was kind of mad,” he notes. “I wanted to call U2 and get my money back.” Comparing the bands’ utilization of Sphere’s next-level technology, Carey offered that Phish “made [U2] look like a bar band,” then course-corrected, adding “Nothing against U2, it was a great show. I think Phish took full advantage of the audio and the video in that place and what could possibly be done.” In the wake of the moment, Carey’s thoughts are aligned with so many others as his “mind is spinning about things [he] want[s] to see at the Sphere.”
Carey’s rapid entry into the fold of Phish fans began with a cheeky and striking tweet, in which he swore that “I would give you all my money, stick my dick in a blender and swear off pussy for the rest of my life in exchange for this.” Wide-eyed at the majesty of peak-performance Phish, he concluded, “Bro I met God tonight for real. I feel like I just got saved by Jesus no lie.” Phish noted their appreciation for Carey’s glowing review by gifting him a blender, with a message from frontman Trey Anastasio, who penned on the boxed kitchen appliance, “So thrilled you could be at The Sphere with us! Hope you enjoy this gift and let’s do it again.”
