Listen: Big Freedia’s “Explode” Sampled On New Beyoncé Song “BREAK MY SOUL”

Last night, Beyoncé shared a new single titled “BREAK MY SOUL” as the first musical offering from her highly anticipated seventh studio album Renaissance, set to release on July 29. The momentous track features a sample from Big Freedia’s “Explode” off her 2014 album Just Be Free.

Co-produced by acclaimed songwriters Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, “BREAK MY SOUL” is the perfect disco-house escape needed for the summer. The lead single pulls inspiration from the timeless synth progression in Robin S’s 1993 anthem “Show Me Love” while layers of Freedia’s “Explode” come over a nightclub-esque beat. Pointedly shared amidst Pride and Juneteenth festivities, “Break My Soul” highlights dancefloor liberation and how Black and LGBTQ communities have healed in this space for decades.

In 2021 Beyoncé told Harper’s Bazzar, “With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again,” the singer continued, “I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible.”

The bounce music pioneer first became a contributor to the mega celebrity’s catalog after joining forces with Beyoncé back in 2016 on the Lemonade track, “Formation,” and expressed her delight to once again join Beyoncé’s ever-growing and iconic catalog in a post. “It feels surreal to be on the track with the Queen Beyonce,” said Big Freedia. “Once again I’m so honored to be apart of this special moment I’m forever grateful lord. Someone please catch me.”
