On February 19, Lake Street Dive will release their next studio record. Back in July the quintet shared the spirited single “You’re Never Around” without announcing any details about the album to follow. What About Flamingos? represents the initial offering from their own label, Dive Not Dive Records.

Lake Street Dive worked with two producers during sessions that spanned both coasts. The group recorded with Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Big Thief, Cass McCombs) at Spillway Sounds in West Hurley, NY, as well as Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Angel Olsen, Dawes, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Five Star Studios in Los Angeles.

The What About Flamingos? sessions marked the first occasion in which the musicians recorded live together in a room, capturing the energy they bring to bear in the performance setting. The band notes, “When we set out to record this album, our focus was simple: to play live in a room together—human and alive and perfect in its imperfection. We arrived without knowing what songs the others had been writing, with an open invitation to bring anything to the session. Each of us brought our own stories, loves, losses, and philosophies. As the album came together, a common thread.”

Lake Street Dive has just released the title track and shared a video as well. Bassist Bridget Kearney explains, “This gratitude for what we have, and the magic of being alive infuses the entire album. In a stream of consciousness, the first thing that came to mind was, what about flamingos.”

What About Flamingos? is now available for preorder.
