King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard just won’t stay put. Just eight months after dropping Flight b741, the genre-obliterating Australian rockers have unveiled their 27th studio album, Phantom Island. While the details in this first warning are sparse, the band does detail that it’s “2 years in the making” and features an “orchestra,” the latter of which is readily apparent on the exhilarating title track they shared as a single back in October 2024. They’ll share the release date on April 15, alongside preorder access, a music video for the second single “Deadstick” and a Reddit AMA.

With “Phantom Island,” King Gizzard try on one of the very few sounds they hadn’t broached yet. Backed by schmaltzy string and horn arrangements, the band holds fast to its idiosyncracies, laying out a smoky, slick and dancefloor-ready pseudo-disco cruise that crashes head-on into an angular and totally unhinged beat-switch. They cut the track in the sessions for Flight b741, and frontman Stu Mackenzie touched on its surprising origins among those scuzzy barnburners in a statement with its release:

“Hello world. So our last album was 10 songs. Except we recorded 20 in that session. Here’s a track from the other set of 10. It’s even more maxxed out than the last one. There’s a whole fuckin’ orchestra on there. Hahahahahah! But for real, what a joy to be alive. A privilege to be making music for a living and to be here still after all these years. If you’ve been listening to Gizz for a long time, thank you. We love you so much. If you’re just tuning in, welcome to the cult. Love, Papa Stu xoxoxox.”

King Gizzard will take this sonic upheaval to the stage with the Phantom Island Tour, which will feature a different 28-piece orchestra at each of its nine performances from July 28 to Aug. 11. This run–King Gizzard’s only U.S. performances of 2025, save for a three-show residenct at Bonnaroo–will conclude with Field of Vision, a three-night camping event booked for Buena Vista, Colo.’s Meadow Creek from Aug. 15-17.
