During the latest episode of Elton John’s Rocket Hour radio show for Apple Music, Joni Mitchell announced plans to release her comeback at Newport Folk Festival as a live album.
The album will showcase her surprise set at the iconic music festival where she had last performed in 1969. The set, which was touted as the JONI JAM included 13 songs including contributions from Brandi Carlile on “Carey” “Big Yellow Taxi” and “A Casey Of You” which also included Marcus Mumford.
During the interview, Sir John said, “I’ve seen you through music and of course, your incredible rehabilitation, but music has helped you so much and it’s beautiful to watch you evolve. And people out there, you haven’t heard things from the Newport Folk Festival yet, but I think there’s going to be an album coming out of that one?”
To which Mitchell replied: “Yeah, we’re trying to put that out.” She then revealed that the performance “didn’t have any” rehearsals and her feelings about standing up to play guitar during the set.
“Yeah, that I had to figure out what I did,” she said. “And I couldn’t sing the key, I’ve become an alto, I’m not a soprano anymore, so I couldn’t sing the song. And I thought people might feel lighted that if I just played the guitar part but I like the guitar part to that song. So anyway, it was very well received, much to my delight.”
Mitchell is planning to continue her to return to the stage and will perform her first headlining show in 23 years in 2023, according to Carlile.
