From Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, legendary guitarist John Scofield touched down in New York for a six-night run at the storied Blue Note jazz club. In these twelve shows, the iconic, genre-bending fusion instrumentalist debuted a new quartet configuration, staging alongside the tried and true rhythm section of bassist Vincente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart (his longtime accompanists in the John Scofield Trio), as well as two-time Grammy-winning trumpetist Nicholas Payton, known for collaborations with Trey Anastasio, Herbie Hancock, Allen Toussaint and more. While this occasion marked the foursome’s first billing as the John Scofield Quartet, Archer and Stewart previously supported Payton’s 2023 Nouveau Standards show at Blue Note, during which Scofield sat in as a special guest. Through the holiday weekend, the new group drew on each of their discographies to deliver passionate treatments of familiar favorites, like Scofield’s “Icons at the Fair” and Payton’s “Othello on the Low”) as well as standards like Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser.”
