The Songwriters Hall of Fame has selected John Fogerty to receive its top honor during the annual induction ceremony and award gala on June 11, 2026, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. During the occasion, the lyricist behind standards like “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” and “Bad Moon Rising” will be given the coveted Johnny Mercer Award.
The imminent award is reserved for songwriters who have already received SOHF status–Fogerty was inducted in 2005. The Johnny Mercer Award recognizes an individual who surpasses the standard creative output by producing lyrics with an enduring hold on listeners.
Like the prize’s namesake, Mercer’s contributions to the canon, “Moon River,” “The Days of Wine and Roses,” and more help delineate Fogerty’s ability to produce gold standard lines that stick with the listener and demand repeated plays.
Beyond Fogerty’s Songwriters Hall of Fame achievement, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1993. As the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and producer in the swamp rock ensemble, Fogerty scored accolades for spearheading “Born on the Bayou,” “Have You Ever Seen The Rain,” and other timeless tracks that came before his triumphant solo career.
Fogerty joins a list of previous recipients of the Johnny Mercer Award: Paul Simon, Carole King, Billy Joel, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Van Morrison, Elton John, and more. View the complete list of past award winners here.
