September 23 is the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth. To mark the occasion, Rhino will release Coltrane 100, a special cross-label career retrospective. Coltrane 100 – Selections from 1951-1967 will be released as a deluxe 6 LP vinyl. A second version, Coltrane 100 – Highlights from 1957-1964, will be available the same day on 2 LP and CD.
Coltrane 100 will draw together recordings originally released on Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic, Columbia, and Impulse! As a result, the release will span an era that begins with his original professional sessions in 1951 through his final creative explorations before he passed away in 1967.
Coltrane 100 – Selections from 1951-1967 and Coltrane 100 – Highlights from 1957-1964 will be released on October 2 and are available for pre-order. The 6 LP box set is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany and housed in a slipcase with a 12-page booklet. Bernie Grundman has remastered the tracks, while Coltrane scholar Ben Ratliff has contributed a new essay. Purchases made via Rhino.com and select independent retailers will include an exclusive, limited-edition 12x12 typography poster featuring the album’s centennial artwork.
