Jeff Tweedy Welcomes His Sons, Granddog in Brooklyn

Last night, Jeff Tweedy played an intimate show at Brooklyn, NY’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. The gig, a later addition to his current solo run, took place just weeks before the long-running venue, which opened in 2007 and operated as North Six before that, is slated to close.

Tweedy’s son Spencer kicked off the festivities with Case Oats, a project fronted by his wife Casey Walker. (The couple tied the knot earlier this fall). Then, during “A Robin or a Wren,” a track from the elder Tweedy’s 2020 COVID-era LP Love Is the King, Jeff brought out Spencer and his younger son Sammy—who is also working on a solo album and was in NYC for a show of his own—to sing backup vocals. Spencer and Sammy returned to the stage a few songs later to help their dad out on “Enough,” from later year’s Twilight Override and, in a highly visual moment, Spencer brought his dog, which Jeff described as his “granddog,” on stage for the number. At one point, he humorously placed the mic in the dog’s face, though he remained mum. Both of Jeff’s children also emerged for the night’s final selection, Twilight Override highlight “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter,” which he described as a love letter to sweaty concerts written during a moment when live-music was temporally paused during the pandemic.

The Wilco frontman also shouted out his wife Sue, who booked Chicago’s Lounge Ax from 1989-2000 and married Tweedy in the venue, while talking about Music Hall’s unfortunate closer. Later, he dedicated Yankee Hotel Foxtrot tune “I’m the Man Who Loves You” to her.

Tweedy will perform at Carmel, IN’s Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre tomorrow.
