Jeff Mattson Will Play Jerry Garcia’s Alligator Guitar on Saturday at DSO Rex Foundation Benefit

10:57 AM EDT on July 31, 2026

Dark Star Orchestra will appear at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA, for a special two-night run. The Music Never Stops: A Rex Foundation Benefit & Tribute to Bob Weir will feature some specials guests in support of the organization.

Tonight, Friday, July 31, Melvin Seals and JGB ft. Jazz Mafia Horns will deliver a performance prior to the two-set Dark Star Orchestra show. On Saturday, Peter Rowan & Sam Grisman Project will open the evening and present music from Old & In The Way.

Although DSO does not typically announce in advance the show that they’ll interpret, they have confirmed that on Saturday it will be the 8/1/73 Roosevelt Stadium show, which took place on Jerry Garcia’s 31st birthday at Jersey City, NJ. That gig also represented the final time that Garcia performed with his Alligator guitar before he retired it. To mark this special occasion, DSO guitarist will play Alligator on Saturday night via a loan from Grateful Guitars Foundation founder Andy Logan.

Tickets are still on sale for both nights.
