The legendary godfather of punk, Iggy Pop, has announced his 19th studio album, Every Loser, the follow-up to 2019’s Free, which will release on Jan. 26, 2023. While Free was considered to be a somber and contemplative work, Pop guarantees the new record is a no-frills, loud rock record.

Every Loser will incorporate Pop’s primordial rock and punk roots with a modern, lyrical viewpoint and sonic palette. The album was recorded by a cast of young studio musicians led by renowned producer Andrew Watt. Watt, whose recording credits span from artists like Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Ozzy Osbourne and Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings, played a key role in the making of the record.

“Iggy Pop is a fucking icon,” Watt declared in a press release. “A true original. The guy invented the stage dive. I still can’t believe he let me make a record with him. I am honored. It doesn’t get cooler. This album was created to be played as loud as your stereo will go. Turn it up and hold on.”

The intricacies of the record don’t end with the music: The 11 tracks will be accompanied by an album cover designed by the world-renowned contemporary fine artist Raymond Pettibon. Pettibon, who first gained recognition for his anti-authoritarian, punk-inspired art in the late 1970s, has previously designed album covers for seminal acts like Sonic Youth and Black Flag. The artwork for Every Loser will be on full display in a variety of mediums. The album will be released digitally alongside limited-edition vinyl, cassettes and CDs. Furthermore, Every Loser will be accompanied by an exclusive relaunch of the zine PUNK Magazine. The issue will be fully dedicated to all things Iggy Pop, complete with a long-form interview between Pop and the iconic virtuosic bassist Flea.

In a statement, Pop provided his perspective on the upcoming album. “I’m the guy with no shirt who rocks; Andrew (Watt) and Gold Tooth (Records) get that, and we made a record together the old-fashioned way,” Pop proclaimed. “The players are guys I’ve known since they were kids and the music will beat the shit out of you.” It seems that with more than 50 years into his storied career, it’s clear Iggy Pop’s sense of creativity and punk rock sensibilities are as strong as they’ve ever been.
