My Morning Jacket closed out its special extended run at the Fillmore in San Francisco over the weekend. As initially promised when the shows were announced, each performance was keyed in a color of the rainbow. The run progressed from red on Saturday October 3, all the way through to violet on Sunday, October 11. (For the record, the progression is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.)
One surprising element that recurred over the course of the run, is that the band offered up a Grateful Dead cover each evening. On Sunday, Grahame Lesh joined the proceedings and facilitated this aspect of the show. He emerged near the close of the evening for George Harrison’s “Isn't It a Pity.” Lesh then contributed to a set-closing version of the Dead’s “Sugar Magnolia,” with Jim James on Jerry Garcia's Alligator guitar. All six musicians returned for the initial song of the encore, which was an acoustic version of Phil Lesh’s “Box of Rain.” This was the first time that MMJ had played the song. The evening concluded with James offering a solo take on “Bermuda Highway” with his four bandmates then returning for “Love Love Love” and “Dancefloors,” with James back on Alligator for the concluding selection.
For those of you scoring at home, here are the Grateful Dead songs performed each evening by MMJ across the seven shows.
