Over the weekend, Tedeschi Trucks Band took their tour to the South. During the first of two nights in the region, the concert was held at Atrium Health Amphitheatre in Macon, Ga. It included an opening frame from longtime collaborator and Derek Trucks’ 90s-era Allman Brothers bandmate, Warren Haynes, and his Gov’t Mule ensemble. During the night’s jumping off point, more guests were added to the roster, including New Orleans great, George Porter Jr.

Saturday, October 11, began with Gov’t Mule’s opening frame, a dominant display of originals and a peppering of covers, among them Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” woven into “Beautifully Broken,” with support from Porter Jr. The bassist stuck around for an ensuing display of his own history, The Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby.” As a fitting ode to their performance in the land of The Allman Brothers Band, Trucks took the stage and paid homage to shared roots with Haynes on “Desdemona.”

Trucks stayed on stage and assisted Gov’t Mule, who were joined by Terrence Higgins [filling Matt Abts’ role behind the kit], on “Rocking Horse.” Ultimately, Trucks’ wife, Susan Tedeschi, helped their friend Haynes close out his set on a well-chosen send-off, “Soulshine.” During TTB’s ensuing stage time, they worked through classics from their songbook as well as borrowed material, including Ben E. King’s “It Ain’t Fair” with a tease of ABB’s “Dreams.”

After pairing “Angels From Montgomery” and Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree,” they went with the Made Up Mind title track, before referencing I Am The Moon via “Pasaquan,” featuring Haynes. Once again, the pair nodded to their Allman history and the location through a tease of “Little Martha,” which set up the band and their guest for a complete siege of “Mountain Jam.” For TTB’s final song, they kept Haynes present for The Beatles’ classic, “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

The next evening, TTB was billed to play at The BayCare Sound in Clearwater, Fla., sans openers Gov’t Mule. The concert leaned into expected content, including a cover of Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero.” Upon completion and before the first note of “Pasaquan,” Haynes emerged, sitting in on the number for the second time in two nights, and contributing the concert’s final offering, a cover of Matthew Moore’s “Space Captain.” Haynes was on location ahead of his band’s gig at the city’s Ruth Eckerd Hall [tonight].

Following their latest appearances, Tedeschi Trucks Band will arrive at the FirstBank Amphitheatre in Franklin, Tenn., tomorrow, October 15. Tickets remain on sale.

Meanwhile, Gov’t Mule performs in Clearwater, Fla., tonight, Oct. 14. Tickets can be purchased here
