Gov’t Mule Resurrect “Forevermore” in Little Rock
Gov’t Mule’s Spring Tour continued on Saturday with a stop at Little Rock, Ark.’s The Hall. After a few years of infrequent touring, the Warren Haynes-fronted Southern rock powerhouse’s first sprawling run of the year has gone above and beyond high expectations since March, including a litany of highlights in their collaborative shows with Larkin Poe, and the nightly surprises have continued as they’ve marched on to the series’ final dates. With their most recent staging, the band revived an old original, amid other hits and reimagined covers.
Gov’t Mule set off their show on Saturday night with the traditional “Railroad Boy,” deployed as a focused opener for the fourth time on their tour so far. “Rocking Horse” kicked up some dust, then the band burnt a smoldering blues number with their take on Ann Peebles’ “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight.” More heavy hitters like “Larger than Life” took the group to set break with another blues cover, this time turning to Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline).”
With “Same As It Ever Was,” Gov’t Mule stormed the stage again with the same intensity that Peace… Like a River cut has encouraged since 2023. The quartet honored their forebearers with the year’s first cover of The Band’s “Stage Fright,” then veered into “Forevermore”; the highlight from 2009’s By a Thread made it to the stage for the first time since 2019. After Muddy Waters’ “Long Distance Call” and Al Green’s “I’m a Ram,” the band capped off their concert with an uncommon cover of ZZ Top’s “Blue Jean Blues.”
Two shows remain on Gov’t Mule’s Spring Tour. They’ll hit Fayetteville, Ark.’s Ozark Music Hall tomorrow night, then conclude the outing with a night t New Orleans’ storied Orpheum Theater on May 1, following a performance from the Warren Haynes Band’s Dreams and Songs experience at the same venue on the prior evening.
