Goose Revive Walter Murphy’s Instrumental “A Fifth Of Beethoven” in Louisville
On Tuesday evening, Goose commenced the first of two nights on the Louisville Palace Theatre stage in Louisville, Ky. The latest performance occurred after the foursome delivered a debut of Future Islands’ “Peach” during their Chicago stand on Saturday, Sept. 20. During last night’s concert, they maintained the trend of reinvigorating their setlist by returning to Walter Murphy’s disco-informed instrumental, “A Fifth Of Beethoven,” which emerged for the first time in 108 shows.
Before the band revived the first note of Murphy’s composition, they had prepared a sequence of material to take their audience on a music-filled journey that would build into their bust-out. Their initial move focused on Cotter Ellis’ Swimmer days via “My Mind Has Been Consumed By Media,” which dropped into a slow and melodic approach to “All I Need.” The latter was left unfinished, and ultimately swapped out and replaced by “Inside Out” by Spoon.
They continued their nonstop run through songs by picking up Dripfield cut, “Borne,” which ultimately fused with Murphy’s “A Fifth Of Beethoven,” for the first time since June 11, 2024. The cover has been a part of Goose’s repertoire since October 31, 2019. The track was played on occasion in the months following its debut and has averaged one to two plays annually since then, making the instrumental a rarity that carries the potential to shine with full capacity disco and funk tendencies.
Goose came to a complete stop after their return to Murphy’s track, but went on to showcase originals, “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet,” “Spirit Of The Dark Horse,” and “Dustin Hoffman” before breaking at halftime. The concert’s second frame began with a well-received take on “Pancakes,” which ran into the title track off the first of two albums Goose released this year, Everything Must Go. More originals ensued, including an unfinished “White Lights” segued with “Bob Don.”
They settled on Nina Simone-associated “Sinner Man” for the final song of the main frame, working through the borrowed number before returning to originals during the encore, “Slow Ready” and “SALT.” Following last night’s concert, Goose will return to the Louisville Palace Theatre stage tonight for their second and final performance at this location on their Fall Tour.
