Futurebirds and Carl Broemel Share “Buffet Days” off Upcoming EP ‘Bloomin’ Too’

American psychedelic indie rock band Futurebirds have reunited with My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel for their upcoming EP, Bloomin’ Too, set to release on Sept. 9 via No Coincidence Records. Yesterday, Futurebirds and Broemel shared the first single off the seven-track EP titled “Buffet Days.”
Futurebirds–comprised of Carter King, Daniel Womack, Thomas Johnson, Brannen Miles, Kiffy Myers, Spencer Thomas and Tom Myers–recorded Bloomin’ Too at Ronnie’s Place in Nashville, Tenn., with Broemel. During the sessions, the two musical worlds seamlessly came together through sincere kinship and natural musical harmony, which was prominent on their first collaboration, 2021’s Bloomin’.
“Carl is really in tune with what the band is and what it strives to be,” said King in a press release. “He’s engaged and understands our vision…And it’s great to be able to defer to someone you respect so much with creative decisions in the studio…”
“Buffet Days” serves as the perfect foretaste of the upcoming collection, illustrating both the project’s meaning and tone, which contributing Rolling Stone writer and author of If You Can’t Play, Get Off The Stage: Bluegrass In Western North Carolina & Beyond, Garret K. Woodward, called “a vortex of sonic textures.”
“We’ve been unintentionally carving out our own space since the beginning, since we never exactly fit in anywhere else musically,” King said of Futurebirds’ signature tone and wide musical palette. “We were always too indie rock for the jam festival, too country for the indie scene, a little too psych-rock to feel like we were Americana. The music over the years just kind of created its own weird little ecosystem — it’s thriving and it feels great.”
Futurebirds are currently performing in support of their new EP as special guests with CAAMP as part of their July tour and are set up for a two-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., in October. They will also be supported by Illiterate Light on their own headlining tour this fall. See the full dates below.
