This August, Portland-grown folk-rock band Fruition will return with How To Make Mistakes, its first studio album in four years. For their sixth studio record, set to release Aug. 23, the band’s core quintet of Jay Cobb Anderson, Kellen Asebroek, Mimi Naja, Jeff Leonard and Tyler Thompson produced the record on their own, recording each of the album’s 13 tracks “live off the floor.” In lyrics, melody and production, the resulting album centers the longtime friends living in the moment.

“Saturday Night,” the lead single from How To Make Mistakes is out now, and serves as a testament to the ensemble’s renewed creative energy. Over the last fifteen years, the eclectic quintet has amassed acclaim for their three-part harmonies and magnetic bluegrass sound. These trademarks are readily apparent on the preview, which glints with soaring vocal overlays, winding slides and a laid-back groove stitched together with zealously experimental improvisation. “If you’re doing it right, you’re bound to make mistakes,” Anderson explains, “and bruised fruit always tastes a little bit sweeter.”

To support the upcoming album, Fruition announced a new set of dates for its 2024 touring. The band will take the stage next on July 4 at Kit Carson Park in Taos, N.M., with another show in the state’s capital of Santa Fe the following evening at Railyard. Shortly following, the band is slated for a number of performances in its home state of Oregon, including Veneta’s Oregon Country Fair, scheduled for July 12 and Bend’s Munch and Music on Aug. 1. Mama Magnolia and Joelton Mayfield will support the genre-eclipsing outfit on select dates. Fruition will go on to make 18 further appearances through the end of September, passing through Canada, Mountain West, Midwest and East Coast.
