Bill Kreutzmann has been hiding Easter eggs. The original Grateful Dead backbeat alluded to the making of an event, using his Instagram platform to poke at a potential lineup and location. The first clue arrived on the drummer’s social media on Saturday, Oct. 12, in the form of a garage jam clip, paired with the caption: “Went to the garage to go grab something and couldn’t help myself. Last week, a fortune cookie told me I was going to start doing what I love again. How’d it know?”

Kreutzmann’s Easter egg-style approach to churning out content that suggests an impending gathering continued on Tuesday, Oct. 15, with a series of artist-generated videos suggesting details on something to come. The five-part video sequence begins with Eggy’s Jake Brownstein swinging his arms and walking down the street as the Grateful Dead’s “The Music Never Stops” plays in the background. Continuing the fortune cookie motif, the guitarist tramples the crispy treat, revealing his future, before the shot fades and cuts to black.

Next, Reed Mathis, an original participant in the Billy & the Kids Kauai concerts (circa 2021), cracks open a cookie. At the same time, an overlaid “Bertha” groove complements the scene, and the bassist  proceeds to announce, “Woah, I guess we’re going.” Adam MacDougall hops in next, stunned by the instant appearance of the aforementioned sweet treat. He exclaims, “Say, where’d that come from? Fortune cookie, aye? Let’s see what you got. Well, well, well, well, well, well…” He trails before, “At least I got the right shirt,” referencing his palms and floral-clad button-up.

Strumming his acoustic guitar, Daniel Donato included his acting chops to the mix, opening a fortune cookie and muttering, “Lucky number… The eleven.” After mentioning the Live/Dead staple, Donato adds more context, referring to a potential island location using the fortune cookie as a guide, “Wow. I’m going to see my favorite state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a… Very soon. That’s exciting.”

Closing out the video series, String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann bangs on the bongo before cracking open his own cookie and providing further location information, “You will frolic in the autumn bliss of a land called Hanalei… Hanalei? Well, you can’t spell Hanalei without Han in it. That sounds like my kind of adventure. Let’s go!”
