Episode 8 of ‘Long May They Run’ Explores Phish’s Halloween Traditions, Bluegrass Covers, Jewish Prayers

The new episode of the C13Originals Long May They Run podcast is titled “The Island of Misfit Toys.” While this is, indeed, a Christmas reference, the episode focuses on Phish’s curatorial efforts on Halloween and beyond.

Season one of the series, which is hosted by Relix editor-in-chief Dean Budnick, explores the music and culture of Phish. “The Island of Misfit Toys,” which is episode 8 of the series, features commentary by all four members of the band: Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell. They talk about the origins of the Halloween tradition, including Anastasio’s ongoing appeals to Peter Gabriel to join Phish for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

The episode also touches on the work of other artists, including Brian Eno, Minutemen, the Grateful Dead, The Pretenders, King Crimson, The Who and The Beatles. A discussion of cover music finds Mike Gordon reflecting on how he introduced both the bluegrass song “Uncle Pen” and the Jewish prayer “Avenu Maleknu” to the band’s repertoire. Jon Fishman riffs on the development of ideas such as the band’s “musical costume” and details how the Baker’s Dozen concept came to “fester” over the years. The episode also examines the evolution of music delivery over the past few decades and there’s a “special PSA” from Anastasio to the Talking Heads as well.
