An all-star cast of artists have recorded their takes on Neil Young classics for a new album benefiting The Bridge School. Set to release on April 25, Heart Of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Vol. 1 collects contributions from 14 top-tier bands and soloists. This first dispatch of a two-part series is led by the likes of Eddie Vedder, Fiona Apple, Courtney Barnett and more.
Supporting today’s album announcement, two songs from the compilation have been shared as advance singles: Australian indie forerunner Barnett’s take on “Lotta Love,” a standout from Young’s 1978 record Comes a Time, and a treatment of Young’s still-pertinent 1970 After the Gold Rush entry “Southern Man” by Americana singer-songwriter Chris Pierce, who has opened for the honored icon on the road.
“‘Lotta Love’ is one of my favorite Neil songs, and the lyrics feel especially relevant at this moment in history,” Barnett reflected of her recording in a statement. “It’s a real honor to be part of this tribute helping to raise funds for The Bridge School.”
“Time and time again, I’m reminded of the power of Neil Young’s songs,” Pierce shared. “I’m reminded every time I spin one of his albums at home, when his songs play on the radio, and this was particularly evident when I recently had the honor of being the opening act for his solo tour.”
Other artists featured on Heart Of Gold include Brandi Carlile, Mumford & Sons, Stephen Marley, The Lumineers, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Anders Osborne, Charlie Greene and The Doobie Brothers, who teamed up with Allison Russell for a cover of “Comes a Time” 100% of the proceeds from the album will go to The Bridge School, which was founded by Young’s late ex-wife Pegi to help children with severe speech and physical impairments overcome complex communication needs and participate fully in their communities.
