Dead & Company Tease Residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas

Dead & Company have teased its plan to return to form at The Sphere in Las Vegas. The band shared the speculated news via social media this morning, “In 2023, Dead & Company played their final tour. But there are other ways to make sure the music never stops,” paired with video of the venue featuring projected Dead-related iconography.

Today’s tease for the highly-anticipated return of Bobby Weir, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti, Mickey Hart, and Jay Lane comes after the scale was tipped with an onslaught of rumors that stemmed from a Dec. 14, 2023, released N.Y. Post article, which claimed the band was in talks for a residency at the new state-of-the-art Sin City venue.

Notable, prior to the Post’s claim, Weir was spotted at The Sphere alongside longtime manager Matt Busch, stirring up the assumption that the frontman and his staff were scouting the location while simultaneously experiencing an evening of U2’s residency.

Mayer also added some heat to the fire, appearing on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live coverage and telling fans of Dead & Company to “have hope” after longtime fan of the Grateful Dead and its offshoots, Andy Cohen, asked, “I saw you this summer with Dead & Company. And it was the final tour of Dead & Company. Can you preview anything that may come?”

With dates cooking, Dead & Company’s thoughtful word choice when announcing their Final Tour lends the perspective that perhaps they never intended to fully call the project off, just shift the format from annual summer runs to one-off appearances.

Dead & Company was first formed in 2015, featuring the aforementioned lineup, sub-original backbeat Bill Kreutzmann, whose spot was filled by Lane in 2023. Since Kreutzmann stepped away from the project, he has focused his efforts on his Billy & the Kids project.
