De La Soul’s discography will soon be available on streaming services. The esteemed hip-hop trio shared that their initial six albums will drop on listening platforms beginning March 3. Subsequently, the date also marks the 34th anniversary of their debut release, 3 Feet High and Rise.
Included in the drop is their material produced between 1989 and 2001, which will be released by band member, Maseo’s AOI label. Apart from their debut release, 3 Feet High and Rise, the group will also share De La Soul Is Dead (1991), Buhloone Mindstate (1993), Stakes Is High (1996), Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump (2000) and AOI: Bionix (2001).
For multiple reasons, the group’s early music has been kept off streaming services. In 2019, De La Soul’s initial label, Tommy Boy, re-acquired the rights to the ensemble’s pre-2004 discography from Warner Records. However, the contract was tossed after the trio revealed they would only pocket 10% of profits.
Then in June 2021, Reservoir Media took over Tommy Boy’s rights for a whopping $100 million. By August of the same year, De La Soul has regained control of their master recordings.
