This evening, the Grateful Dead’s classic but previously unreleased 1972 performance at Veneta, OR’s Oregon Country Fair is coming to theaters. As part of Grateful Dead Meet Up at the Movies 2013, the concert film Sunshine Daydream will be screened in theaters across the country tonight at 7:00 p.m. local time. Sunshine Daydream spotlights the band’s famed performance against a pastoral background in the Oregon countryside. Shot originally on 16mm film and painstakingly restored to HD resolution. The film has previously only been screened at a few film festivals and through bootleg recordings. It appears in our recent Relix 40 list of Classic Concert Films Tickets for "Grateful Dead Meet Up at the Movies 2013 " are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. The event will be presented in nearly 450 select movie theaters around the country through NCM’s exclusive Digital Broadcast Network. In an conversation with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux, which will run soon on the site, he explains, "One thing most people will be seeing for the first time is a complete version of “Bird Song.” There was a version that was filmed but not included in the cut of the movie that we’ve all been watching for the last 25 or so years. That’s been restored all from the 16mm film negative and the “Bird Song,” I’ve always considered the best ever. And that’s saying a lot, especially those 1972-73 versions that really soared, or really ‘71-’73. And this one is just so inspired and engaged and the band is just really, really lighting it up. And then to be able to see them play this in the hot sun is just such a spectacular thing to see the whole thing and see how the band interacts visually, the sonic cues, the looks they give each other when they’re doing things, it’s just a really wonderful piece."
